Maynard Art Show: Some rivers meander and some rivers REALLY meander. It’s tough to find a more notable example than this stretch of the Ural River in Kazakhstan. You can trace the active flow left to right in this image. About a third of the way in, you see a meander that will likely close off within the next decade. Yet this will in turn cause new erosion and deposition, creating a new meander. This process happens with slow rivers in a broad flat plain. The meanders sometimes create oxbow lakes, and the region is very fertile – here maintained as a natural reserve.
