Maynard Art Show: Astronauts have noted that nature works in curves. With nary a straight line, this image of the South Aral Sea in Uzbekistan illustrates that point. The beautiful aqua and the subtle shades of grey and brown give such grace to this artfully composed image. Yet this impression belies the tragedy of this region. Formerly one of the largest lakes in the world, the Aral Sea has dried over the past fifty years to 1/10 of its original size. Massive irrigation canals diverted the inflowing tributaries, leaving arid devastation in their wake.
